Slices of the Zest

An Hour Outside Seattle In November

The Zest of the Lemon Volume 1
All night in the city
Jazz drifts out to the sidewalks
Neon lights buzz above the bars
A car slips its clutch and grinds uphill
But here in the stillness
The rain blows by like a drawn curtain, mice
disturb the fallen leaves
My husband whistles for the border collie and
shuts the back door.
This is Northwest farm quiet:
a lone, far train rounding a bend its headlights
tracing the barn roof, an owl ruffling its feathers,
the falling dark
touching the fields.

So, I checked Amazon, and yes, the first edition of The Zest of the Lemon was published April 17, 2025. Perhaps I missed the email with the links notifying me.
If I’m not mistaken, you accepted one of the images I submitted. It’s always nice to see your work in published form, however, paying $25 (plus shipping) for a paperback edition is a bit much – especially considering there was no payment offered for acceptance.
Many publications, that don’t pay their creatives, at least send them a PDF file of the publication. Perhaps you might consider that, even though it’s now a bit after the fact. Not only is it fair, it would probably encourage those whose work appears on the pages of Zest to promote the publication.
Though I’m regularly receiving updates on the progress your Substack project, I’m including my email just in case ended up on the wrong list. rod_raglin@yahoo.com
Thanks and I look forward to your response.
Hi David. Has the first edition of The Zest of the Lemon been published. I understood it would be in April. Please advise and/or send me the links so I can promote it on my social media channels. Thanks.
